India Needs All Inclusive Growth

By S G Haque

Some Indians might have figured in the billionaire list of world famous Forbes, Fortune and such other listings and the Government of India is feeling good about achieving the target of economic growth and development, but on the other hand, a vast majority of Indians are feeling worse, as they are battling on the front of livelihood. Everybody is aware that about 30% of population is below poverty line. Among rest of the population, a large number is poor and deprived of even basic things needed. It is also a fact that the gap between rich and poor is widening day by day. The common man is seen struggling hard to win bread. It is an undeniable fact that the economic health of Indians is not good. In spite of brainstorming and taking serious steps to end the economic disparities and creating a sustainable means of livelihood, the think tank of the country remains busy to make the public feel good. But the Vice-President of India, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat has stressed for the need of all inclusive growth and development. Addressing a convocation of TATA INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES at Mumbai on Saturday, he said that, the content of growth and development is more important that the measurement of growth per se. He pointed out that we need development that promotes growth not just in terms of percentage increase in GDP, but which brings out all inclusive development, growth that uplifts the poor, eradicate illiteracy, provides the common with access to basic education, health care and shelter. No doubt, India needs an all inclusive growth and development, instead of racing to achieve 8 percent, 9 percent or double digit pre fixed target. We should fix a target to eradicate poverty and provide access to education, employment, housing, health care and sanitation etc; to all by a certain period.
